Ron Hugate, MD and Mark Mauries have returned from Haiti where they worked with a surgical team at a hospital at Hinche. They performed over 30 surgeries on Haitian earthquake victims in their week there. The majority of the surgeries were to fix femur fractures, as well as extremity amputations due to crush injuries.
"I think we are now getting outside the 'window of opportunity' to treat the acute extremity injuries. The next phase of orthopedic care will be massive and will consist of treatment of malunion/nonunions and chronic draining open fractures/osteomyelitis. There will be TREMENDOUS need for orthotics and prosthetics in about 2 months, and probably a fair number of delayed amputations as well" said Dr. Hugate.
To assist with the prosthetic and orthotic needs, as well as having a team from the Extremities at Risk amputation service line go to Haiti, The Denver Clinic for Extremities at Risk is encouraging donations to the Limb Preservation Foundation's Project Haiti Fund.
