Extremities at Risk Clinicians Return From Haiti. Encouraging Donations to Project Haiti Fund

Ron Hugate, MD and Mark Mauries have returned from Haiti where they worked with a surgical team at a hospital at Hinche. They performed over 30 surgeries on Haitian earthquake victims in their week there.  The majority of the surgeries were to fix femur fractures, as well as extremity amputations due to crush injuries.

"I think we are now getting outside the 'window of opportunity' to treat the acute extremity injuries. The next phase of orthopedic care will be massive and will consist of treatment of malunion/nonunions and chronic draining open fractures/osteomyelitis. There will be TREMENDOUS need for orthotics and prosthetics in about 2 months, and probably a fair number of delayed amputations as well" said Dr. Hugate.

To assist with the prosthetic and orthotic needs, as well as having a team from the Extremities at Risk amputation service line go to Haiti, The Denver Clinic for Extremities at Risk is encouraging donations to the Limb Preservation Foundation's Project Haiti Fund. For more information about the fund please click on the Limb Preservation Foundation logo at the top of this page.

Eight-year-old Tatiana Medina has already had 18 CT scans – more than most people will have in a lifetime – and she’ll need even more in the future. Fortunately, Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center and Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children at P/SL just invested in one of the most advanced CT (a.k.a. “cat”) scan technologies in the world – assuring that such tests are now remarkably safer, faster and more comfortable for Tatiana and other patients.
